Lemon law requires manufacturers or sellers to repair, replace, or refund the cost of products that prove to be defective. The Basics of Lemon Law

While lemon law varies by state, there are two governing principles that apply to all defective products and vehicles in the United States.

- The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

According to federal law, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects the buyer of any product that costs over $25, comes with an express written warranty, and does not perform as it should. This law extends considerable rights to consumers who purchase lemon cars because if any part of the vehicle is considered defective, the manufacturer must offer the buyer either a replacement or a refund. Under what is known as the “three strikes and you're out” rule, law firms have often argued that lemon manufacturers should be granted three chances to correct the defect before legal action is pursued.
