In the 1970s, the federal government passed several acts aimed to protect the ever-increasing stressed environment. This formed the basis of environmental law. Of the acts passed, the most influential has been the Environmental Protection Agency , which monitors the environment through research and works with state and local governments. The government also passed the National Environment Policy Act that has forced governmental agencies to consider what effect their policies would have on the environment.
